Henry the Castaway

This is the first time that we have ever completed an entire “row” in one day!  I wanted this row to be fun and simple, and that it was.

We started in the morning by reading the book and placing our story disk…

(The land of Make-Believe)

Then I had the boys each get to work designing their own flags…

so that they would have a way to claim their never-before-discovered lands.

Conner made “C” flags.

Logan’s flags were rectangles with his initial in the center of a spiderweb.

I told them to pack their backpacks with things that an explorer might need (flashlights, water, hats) (if we had whistles, those would have gone in the kits), while I made them lunches to take on their adventure.

Then I sent them out back and told them to go explore uncharted territories.

At first they weren’t really sure where to go.

They decided to sit right under those trees (20ft from the back door) and start eating their lunches.

Then they decided they wanted to go explore the fields on the other side of the canal that runs along our property.

Since it was a Saturday and Raphael was home, he lifted them up over the fence, one-by-one…except for Dalton (who was not happy to be left out).

They walked for a little ways on their own…

until Raphael got nervous and went to help them scope things out a bit.  😉

They found a spot to stop and eat the rest of their food, while Raphael loitered around checking out some nearby horses.

And spying on them…

Raphael came back after a few minutes of them getting settled.  Then about 20 minutes later they came back and appeared at our fence-line.

🙂

Raphael had set up a tent in our backyard the previous night so that he and the three older boys could camp-out, but they came inside around 3am because they were all cold and Raphael’s back was hurting him.  So the second night (the same night as the boys’ big adventure), we told the two big boys that they could camp out there by themselves if they thought they could handle the cold.  They were enthusiastically up for it…

but first we had to grill hamburgers and hot dogs…

and eat s’mores…

cooked in the grill.  🙂

Conner and Logan made it in the tent all night, and this is how we found them in the morning…

piled with blankets and barely visible!  But they had fun and felt big.

Good times.  🙂
