So it has been exactly six months since my last day in the life post. I put it on my calendar to do it today, figuring it would be good to pick the 19th, regardless of what we had going on, rather than choose a day that is going well after the fact! So anywho, when I woke up this morning and checked my phone, I saw the reminder to start taking pictures!
4:30am Dalton wakes up and fusses. I nurse him and lay him down to go back to sleep. I’m working on night-weaning him right now, and he only woke up once before that, at 1:30am or so. That’s pretty good for him, considering two weeks ago he was literally waking me up every hour. I laid there for a while and finally decided I’d rather get up early while I was mostly awake than fall back asleep and be woken up soon by Barrett.
5:10am I quietly slip out of my room and head to the kitchen. That’s when I check my phone and realize it’s my day to do this post. I debate whether I want to veg out on the couch and check e-mails and blogs, or whether I should go hop in the shower and get it out of the way now. I decide to be productive and take a shower, even though I know it means I’m likely giving up my precious early morning alone time.
I shower and get ready and head back out into the kitchen at 5:45am. I hear Raphael is awake and clearing his throat somewhere in the house and know that kids will be waking up soon. He thinks he’s quiet, but he’s not. If his freedom depended on his being quiet, he’d manage to step it up a notch (or, in this case, tone it down).
Sure enough, about 5 seconds later, Barrett comes stumbling out of his bedroom. He wants his milk…
and a story…
and lots of cuddles…
And now Lightfoot is ready to leave for work…
(If he looks tired, it’s because he is. Homeboy has been burning the candle at both ends. The last year and a half have been the busiest of our lives, by far. 🙁 Plus he’s fighting a cold and not feeling well.)
6:15am Raphael leaves for work and I linger on the couch with Barrett for a few minutes. Then I decide I want a cookie, so that means Barrett also gets a cookie…at 6am.
He’s obviously surprised…and thrilled! He asks for milk to go with his cookie…and he wants to eat it out on the back patio…
But then he realizes he needs to pee. So he asks me to hold his milk and cookie.
(This all sounds so familiar…like the plot of a book or something. 😉
6:45am Dalton wakes up. Then Logan wakes up and wants me to read him a story.
7:00am I head to the kitchen to unload the dishwasher…
with a helper of course. Dalton catches me munching on another cookie and he wants one.
Logan gets wind of the cookie situation somehow and he’s now bugging me for the last cookie.
I catch Dalton up on top of the kitchen table (the first of what will probably be 500 times today) and he is literally spraying himself in the face with my counter cleaner.
On purpose. And laughing. It’s a good thing I use vinegar and water to clean with.
7:15am Logan, Dalton and I head to our bedroom to pick out clothes for the day (all of our family’s clothes are currently stored in the master bedroom closet) and to make the bed.
Always with helpers.
While picking out clothes, I notice that the “darks” laundry basket is getting full and will need to be washed today.
Dalton is dressed and brings me his shoes.
Logan is dressed.
7:45am Conner finally wakes up (he is always, always, always the last one awake).
He’s telling me how badly he needs a haircut.
He has no idea we all ate cookies for breakfast. The early bird gets the worm, bud.
8:00am I pull out their math for the day and set it on the table. They start trying to occupy themselves with anything else but math.
They play with cars at the table.
And on the floor. Then they all wander off somewhere. I start working on this post.
8:15am I go check on them and find them playing in their room.
I tell them it’s time for breakfast.
We have yogurt. I give Barrett his morning dose of antibiotics…
He had a pretty nasty infection in his lungs last week. I really strongly dislike using antibiotics, but in this case I decided it was worth it. He was so sick and hadn’t slept for days because of the fevers and constant coughing.
Anyways, I helped Barrett get dressed and both of the little guys found their way outside to play…
And the big kids wander in and out…
(Where did Logan’s clothes go?!)
8:30am I go back inside to start the laundry (darks)…
8:40am Conner sprints into the house and announces that he’s ready to do his math. I mention that I’ll be there in a second to help him. A minute or two later I wander over to see what he needs help with and discover that he is completely done with the front side of his assignment.
I almost keel over from the shock. Most days he and I spend 30 minutes completing his math assignment, and it is usually a struggle for the entire 30 minutes. Somehow today he whipped it out in 2 minutes, without any mistakes. Granted, this appears to be a review week, but still! I will have to ponder the meaning of this. He then finished the back side in another minute or two and moved on.
While I was helping him, I noticed and remembered the rash on his back that appeared the day before, after he’d been working in the garden with Raphael. He and I went to put medicine on it.
Tea Tree Oil and Lavender essential oil.
8:50 We head back outside and I find Barrett playing with the hose.
Now his shirt is wet and needs to be taken off to dry.
I don’t know why I even bother dressing them every day.
8:55am Time for our morning PE time! Running laps and racing…
Then back inside for school assignments.
Math for Logan…
Handwriting for Conner…
Handwriting for Logan…
All of a sudden I hear a loud buzzing noise and discover a bee in the house. I follow him into the office and capture him in a glass jar.
Then I take him out back and let him go.
9:15am Back inside to work on our dictation/copywork method of practice for our All About Reading Lesson.
I read the sentence out loud and the boys write it out on their dry erase boards.
I help them out by holding out the amount of fingers for each letter in the word.
Logan’s practicing his spacing between words… 🙂
Meanwhile, Dalton is drawing on the floor with dry erase markers…
And the three R’s are done by 9:30am!
I tell the boys they can watch a show on TV while I blow dry and straighten my hair. They choose Big Hero 6…good movie!
9:50am I am done blow-drying my hair. Dalton and I head to the laundry room to switch out laundry. First I pull the previously washed and dried clothes down and set them on my bed.
Then I hang the new stuff…
While I am folding and putting away laundry in my room, Dalton is having a melt-down…
10:30am The big boys are still watching their movie. I make a snack of almond butter toast for everybody to share.
I try to distract Dalton from his whining by taking him outside. He’s always happy to go outside.
As soon as we step outside, I hear a buzzing noise. I discover a small swarm of bees hanging out near the eves of our patio.
We go back inside. I read Dalton a story instead.
11:10am The boy’s movie is over, which is good because it’s time for us to leave. We are meeting my sister and nephew at Target at 11:30. Everybody gets dressed AGAIN, and puts their shoes on.
11:30am We swing by the bank first so I can get some cash.
Then we do Target with all 5 boys.
12:05pm We are done at Target, but don’t need to meet our mom and other sister for lunch until 12:45. We decide to head to Kohl’s real quick since I didn’t find any tennishoes I wanted for Logan at Target.
12:30pm Logan and I find shoes at Kohl’s while Aunt Gigi stays in the vehicles with all the other boys.
12:45pm We arrive at our lunch destination (SoCal Fish Tacos…one of our new favorite places to eat on the patio when the weather is nice.)
Yummy food and good company!
2:30pm We arrive home. Naps are blown because little kids slept in the car. The boys need a few minutes to unwind, so I let them relax on the couch and watch a show for 30 minutes. I try to put Dalton down for a nap anyways, but he’s not having it.
I settle onto the couch with Conner and Logan so that we can do our afternoon read-aloud’s together.
We started a new curriculum this week (which I’m hoping to post about soon), and we are doing a brief tour of world geography, before launching into world history sometime in January.
After we read our stories for the day, we head over to the kitchen table so that the boys can do their associated projects.
They work on their own Me-on-the-Map flip-books…
(That is supposed to be the Earth…apparently covered in nothing but ocean.)
(Ditto for Logan.) The phone rings and it is a friend that I need to talk to, so I chat for a few minutes and come back to the table to find this…
His brother helped turn him into a tiger.
4:30pm I decide to call a wrap on the projects for the day and send all the boys outside to play.
6:00pm I start making dinner and the boys come inside.
I ask them to pick up the house of all the toys that have been scattered everywhere throughout the course of the day.
When they are done picking up, they loiter around the kitchen and make all new messes…
6:15pm Daddy’s home!
He says hi to all of us and then gets started on his nightly work for the business at the kitchen table…that way he can still hang out with us and visit.
The boys have decided to tape some type of paper weapon apparatus to their arms.
6:36pm Dinner is almost done!
We’re having homemade cheeseburger macaroni and steamed veggies…simple, easy, and yummy.
The boys drag the chairs back over to the table and take care of their evening chores.
Dalton seizes the opportunity to use the chairs to get back on top of the table.
Logan takes the veggie scraps out to the chickens while Conner feeds Peanut his dinner.
6:45pm Dinner is served!
The boys tell daddy all the things they learned about the Earth today, which leads into a demonstration about the sun shining onto the Earth and why the places near the equator have warmer climates.
Raphael usually does the after-dinner dishes… 🙂
7:15pm All kids get into their jammies and settle down for the evening.
Bedtime cups of milk are poured and Barrett gets his evening dose of medicine.
7:45pm Barrett falls asleep on the couch, which is to be expected since he didn’t take his usual nap today.
Conner and Logan play on the ipad for a little while and I put Dalton to sleep.
When I come back out, Raphael is cuddling with Logan who has fallen asleep.
I work on my blog post for a little while until about 8:45pm when we finally decide it’s time to move all the boys to their beds…Conner is the only one still awake anyways!
They all brush their teeth and get into their beds.
I debate whether or not I should stay up and finish my blog post, but I am feeling very tired and decide to just go to bed instead. I kiss Raphael goodnight (he’ll be up for a few hours still, finishing up his work), grab my water and head to bed.
Wheew! That was a very long post.
